The exact place and time of the beginnings
of baseball in Mexico is difficult to pinpoint. Different cities
including Mazatlan and Veracruz claim to be where baseball
was first played.
However, the most logical theory is that baseball was introduced by American
troops in the 1840's when the United States was attempting to gain control of
Mexico. The American threat began in 1847. Therefore, Mazatlan's claim that he
hosted the first Mexican baseball games in 1847 seems more than reasonable.
The introduction of baseball spread throughout Mexico in conjunction with the
building of the railroad, specifically in the Monterrey-Tampico region in Northern
Mexico. An American named Colonel Joseph Robertson was responsible for introducing
Mexicans to many things (orange trees and brick manufacturing) including baseball
on July 4, 1889. On that date, he permitted his workers a day off and engaged
in a game of baseball with them.
